Jalapeno Pepper and Salmonella News

The CDC and FDA Announce That the Salmonella Outbreak is Over

Yes! This is some of the best news we've heard in ages, even better than when our favorite local bar announced free beer!

Read the news

OLDER NEWS

There has been so much news regarding the salmonella outbreak and our beloved jalapeno peppers, we thought we'd begin compiling information here for our readers. These are dire times for our jalapeno peppers!

Visit this page to keep up-to-date on the salmonella situation and jalapeno peppers.

Some Alternatives to Jalapeno Peppers

If you're having trouble finding jalapeno peppers for your favorite dish, for alternative peppers, I suggest the following:

Poblano Peppers - These are larger than jalapenos with less heat, but you'll get the pepper flavor. They average 1,000 - 2,000 Scoville Units, as opposed to the jalapeno's 2,500 - 8,000 Scoville Units.

Serrano Peppers - These are smaller than jalapenos but quite a bit hotter, running between 5,000 - 23,000 Scoville Units.

You can go with green bell peppers for pretty much the same flavor, but at ZERO Scoville Units, the bell pepper won't give you any of the jalapeno heat. I've been suggesting to people that they can always grab some preserved jalapeno peppers from the store. They're great in a pinch!
